Dear Student,

Throughout the course of Jewish history, Jews have conducted many great debates. It is a tradition that continues to this very day. When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered in November 1947, we learned about a fascinating debate that took place more than two thousand years ago.

Are students of Torah authorized to explicate the Torah's laws or does that authority rest with G‑d alone? When new questions arise, may rabbis use their powers of deduction to derive halachic formulae from halachic precedents, or are we limited to the ancient teachings that were revealed to Moses and the prophets of old?

Join me on Thursday,November 2 or Monday, November 6 for the first lesson of Great Debates in Jewish History, when we will journey back to an ancient debate and explore its ramifications for contemporary times.

Rabbi Yisroel Mangel
